Racing bets start with win and place, and each-way combines the two in one bet: half the stake on the win and half on the place. Exotics such as quinellas, exactas, trifectas and first fours ask you to pick several runners in a set order or combination, which raises the potential return and lowers the chance of collecting.

When a runner is scratched after you have taken a fixed price, deductions are usually applied to winning bets on the remaining runners, because the field has become easier. The deduction depends on the scratched runner's price and is shown in the bet details.

Bets are settled on the official result. If a protest or inquiry changes the placings, the operator's rules decide whether bets are settled on the original or the amended result. Those rules sit in the betting terms rather than on the race card.
